Bloomin' Good Times in Dubois County

Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand
Located in the rolling hills of Southwestern Indiana, Dubois County was named in honor of Toussaint Dubois, a Frenchman who lived in nearby Vincennes, Indiana. The first settlers, many of who were of German and Irish descent,  came to this area in the early 1800s because of its abundant forests and wildlife.  A

buffalo trace that ran through this part of Indiana also attracted many settlers, some coming here in 1801 to settle along the trace which ran from Vincennes to Jeffersonville, Indiana near Louisville, Kentucky.

The turret at Monastery Immaculate Conception
German Catholics were attracted to the area as there was a large Catholic settlement in Vincennes.  They built many wonderful cathedrals in the small towns of Dubois including in Jasper, Huntingburg and most famously, Ferdinand, where the magnificent Monastery Immaculate Conception, built in 1867 and located on 190 acres of undulating hillside, is located.

Each of the towns in the county are distinctive and each has a rich architectural and historical aura.
Historic 4th Street in downtown Huntingburg

Huntingburg so represents small town America that several major motion pictures were filmed there including A League of Their Own, Soul of the Game and The Flood.

This spring, as flowers are blooming, follow the winding roads through the charming cities and hamlets of Dubois County.

Volunteer smorgasbord set for French Lick-West Baden

The historic resort communities of French Lick and West Baden are cooperating to make it easier for people to find their ideal volunteer experience.

At a free Volunteer Open House on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, those over 18 can browse the opportunities available at four nonprofit organizations: French Lick West Baden Museum, French Lick Scenic Railway, Indiana Landmarks, and Visit French Lick West Baden (the convention and visitors bureau for Orange County). Refreshments will be served at the open house, 5-7 p.m. at the Visitors Center in French Lick, IN.

Staff and volunteers from each organization will discuss the various ways volunteers can participate in delivering entertaining and educational programs to visitors. The organizations need volunteers as tour guides, museum store assistants, office assistants, tourism ambassadors and special projects volunteers.

Visit French Lick West Baden provides visitor information via phone, email and in person at the Visitors Center where tourists receive assistance with trip itineraries, obtain information about local and regional attractions, and pick up maps.

Indiana Landmarks, a statewide historic preservation group, offers guided walking tours of the historic French Lick and West Baden Springs hotels and operates Landmarks Emporium, museum stores located inside each historic hotel.

The French Lick West Baden Museum offers visitors a glimpse into the past of the historic resort towns and features “the biggest little show on earth,” a miniature diorama of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus that once occupied winter quarters in French Lick.

The French Lick Scenic Railway, located in the historic French Lick Depot, preserves, restores and displays railroad history. The railway operates train excursions, including a new Murder Mystery event and The Polar Express, a popular winter ride.

Abraham Lincoln turned  203 on Sunday, February 12 and the world premiere of A. Lincoln: A Pioneer Tale to take place in June at the Lincoln Amphitheatre.

The show is set in 1816  when Thomas, Nancy, Sarah, and a young Abraham Lincoln moves to Southern Indiana, at that time a wilderness with bears, cougars and wolves. The family was looking for new opportunities. Amidst the hope of a new life, Abe’s mother Nancy sings a powerful song about moving on to Indiana and never looking back.

The scene fades to the Executive Mansion with President Lincoln talking about his beloved mother to his sons Willie and Tad. “I wish we could have met her,” says Tad. President Lincoln looks at his sons and says “Me, too. She was a special woman. She always taught me to respect others and to remember my place in life.”
So begins A. Lincoln: A Pioneer Tale, a new musical about Abraham Lincoln’s Indiana boyhood years. Audiences will witness this inspiring story come to life at the majestic Lincoln Amphitheatre, a 1,500-seat covered outdoor venue nestled amongst the trees on the very land Lincoln walked as a boy.

A.Lincoln: A Pioneer Tale runs June 8-June30, Wednesday to Saturday evenings with one Sunday matinee July 1. Tickets are currently on sale at the box office (online coming soon) 800-264-4223.

Spa at French Lick Expands to Meet Customer Demand

Four massage rooms added, new shower experience offered and Pluto tubs get a BIG makeover

Some exciting new changes are coming to The Spa at French Lick in the form of new treatment rooms, larger soaking tubs and a new shower system that can only be described as a “shower experience.”
With 65% of its business coming in the form of massages and more requests than they could handle, The Spa at French Lick saw an opportunity to expand. Four additional massage rooms are now under construction in the former salon portion of the spa. The new additions will bring the total number of treatment rooms to 28 in the 27,000 square foot spa.

“Massages are our most requested service,” says Spa Director Kim Allen.  “More and more guests are recognizing the benefits of massage and coming to us to heal injuries, to help with certain health conditions, and to promote overall wellness."

Wellness has been a reoccurring theme ever since the spa first started offering Pluto baths over 100 years ago. With high concentrations of magnesium, sodium and potassium, the Pluto water is enriched with over 20 different minerals. The Soaking mineral baths offer many benefits, including stimulation of circulation, cell hydration and increased moisture retention.  In addition, medical research shows soaking in the water detoxifies and eases muscle and joint tension to induce relaxation.
The inherent benefits of the traditional bath are being enriched with new technology. New spacious garden tubs will allow each bathing experience to be meditative, comfortable and invigorating.

Even the showers are getting a make-over at the resort spa.

“Imagine all the components of your perfect shower,” says Allen. “These new showers not only offer multiple rain showerheads and body sprays but they also let you customize everything from the temperature, to the lights and even the sound thru a digital touchpad.”

The spa, which is open 365 days a year, does not expect any interruption in service during construction. Work will be done after hours and is expected to take 4-6 weeks.

For reservations at the Spa at French Lick as well as its sister property-The Spa at West Baden, please call 888-936-9360.

The dates are set for the Sunset Wine Cruises at Patoka Lake.  Lawrence County’s Carousel Winery is featured Oct 6th. Enjoy food paired with several selections of wine tastings, a full glass of your favorite all while cruising the lake during the long shadows time. Details 888-819-6916.

FoodieAlert! Perry County Food Trail

The Ohio River in Derby, Perry County IN

The Indiana Foodways highlights the best of what Indiana has cooking and included in their Culinary Food Trails is the Perry County Trail  which meanders its way through beautiful Perry County with stops at two wineries as well as long time favorite restaurants. For more information on Indiana Foodways Culinary Trails, visit  www.indianafoodways.com

The following are the Perry County Trail stops along with write-ups from the Indiana Foodways about each.

Blue Heron Winery

5330 Blue Heron Lane off Hwy 66 E.
Cannelton
812-547-7518

The winding gravel path up Blue Heron Lane leads to a boutique winery overlooking the River. Gary and Lynn Dauby host special events in their barn, filled with local art and stone carvings, as well as growing French grapes and making their favorite wines, including the semi-dry Two Towers, and their popular on Deck Red, often paired with chocolate. All wines are $16.97 per bottle. Another path through the woods leads to the impressive 22' Celtic Cross carved from one stone by artist Greg Harris.

Carriage Inn
217 Main Street
Tell City
812-547-2033

Carriage Inn is located in an old brick, quaint carriage house where James Bach landed when he decided to come back home to Indiana from South Carolina.  The menu consists mainly of an array of pizza and sandwich fare plus the now famous Fried Cheescake.  James came up with the Fried Cheescake when a weedding he was catering had a cake disaster. The story goes that a most unusual dessert was created when the groomsmen accidently wrestled their way into the wedding cake.  At the last second, he pulled out some frozen cheescakes from storage and proceeded to experiment to insure something was served to the wedding party.  After a standing ovation from the wedding party, he realized he had a winning dish.  The Fried Cheescake was featured in the One Tank Getaways Cookbook from WTHR-TV, an Indianapolis TV station.  The Carriage Inn was originally opened in 1979 and there is still a booth dedicated to the original owners.

Marcy’ Restaurant
12194 Indiana Street
Leopold
812-843-5548

Leopold is a very small town near I-64 with one very good restaurant - Marcy's, in a very unpretentious modern building with a plain paneled dining room on one side and a pleasant bar on the other. It's hard to snag a table after a local game, when everybody turns out to savor the tender, perfectly seasoned ribs, served with spicy or sweet sauce, available only on Fridays and Saturdays. The marinated rib-eye, chicken livers, frog legs and catfish fiddlers are week-day specialties, and the menu also features a wide choice of sandwiches, appetizers and kids' meals. Most of the entrees should be accompanied by the local specialty; creek (pronounced "crick") fries - potatoes fried with bacon and onions, and finished off with local cheesecake or peach cobbler.

Rocky Point Waterfront Grill
7398 E. State Road 66 "The Scenic By-Way"
Cannelton
812-547-2210

Jim Weeks is "the pig roast man" and a nationally award-winning barbeque specialist. He uses only hard woods in his smoke house, and his own rubs to make the pulled pork, ribs and chicken that are staples of his menu, along with the homemade hot potato chips. But Jim also likes to experiment, and is constantly perfecting his recipes for pork tenderloin, seafood, chicken dishes and desserts. Ask what he's working on if you like surprises, or succumb to the nightly specials: Wing night on Wednesdays, crab legs on Thursdays, prime rib or all-you can-eat fish on Fridays, and classic Italian beef on Saturdays. The casual restaurant with a bar is above the general store at the Marina, with a great view of the river, especially from the balcony.

Tell City Pretzels
1315 Washington St
Tell City
812-548-4499

Tell City Pretzels have been part of Indiana food lore since 1858, when the centuries-old Swiss recipe became a favorite along the Ohio River.

The hand-twisted all natural (just 4 ingredients) pretzels have a new store front at the factory with an antique bar where you can purchase the classic "Der Kruncher" pretzels, Tell City sticks, or new ranch pretzels. Call ahead for a tour that includes the hand-twisting demo.

The Tell City Pretzel company has been designated as an Indiana Artisan food producer. Visit www.indianaartisan.org to learn more!

The Patio
3120 E. State Road 66
Cannelton
812-547-4949
www.ThePatioSteakhouse.com

Three generations of Michelle Stahley's family have made this classic dining experience a pleasure for Perry County's citizenry since the 1960's. With the best Bloody Mary in town, a seafood buffet on Friday nights, and tender grilled prime rib daily, you might expect the see Frank Sinatra and his friends smoking at the bar. Also renowned for their salads, big sandwiches, hand-cut steaks and coconut cream pie, the Patio offers a daily buffet and extensive traditional menu. The frog legs were especially tender and juicy when we visited.

Winzerwald Winery
23600 North Indiana Lake Rd. (CR 39)
Bristow, IN 47515
866-694-6937
www.winzerwaldwinery.com

"The friendly little German-style winery at the top of the hill" is a bit modest for this beautifully appointed tasting room and winery with a spectacular view of the Southern Indiana Uplands just below I-64. Dan & Donna Adams are serious vintners with a great deal of experience and education in wine-making and a string of awards for a variety of complex German and Swiss style wines grown from their own grapes. Winzerwald means "vintners of the forest" and reflects the winery's location in the Hoosier National Forest area. The distinctive Nutcracker logo and label also reflects the Adams' Southern German heritage.

Antique Meal Celebrates 90-Years of Tri Kappa in Mitchel

Tri Kappa recreates 90-year-old menu for anniversary celebration
BY JEFF ROUTH
Times-Mail
jeff@tmnews.com
2/18/2012

MITCHELL — Gamma Epsilon chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa in Mitchell celebrated its 90th anniversary on Jan. 8 with a formal dinner recreating the original induction meeting menu of Jan. 7, 1922.

Charter members of the chapter, Ruth Whitted Alexander, Mary Crawford, Virginia Crawford, Pauline Braman Dalton, Vere Braman Diefendorf, Frances Hostetter, Josephine Marley Hamer, Marjorie Clements Laker, Kathryn Coleman Mathews, Lela Holmes Lindley, Ada Sims Loy, Helen Murphy, Helen Weitknecht and Emma Rhodes, were feted to dinner at the Crawford House in Mitchell.

Debbie Unger, president of the chapter for 2012, is also the owner of the Morgan Keane House on Mitchell’s southwest side. Although not in business any longer as a public venue, Unger still hosts a few events during the year for friends and family — and, in this case, sorority sisters.

“I found the recipes the old-fashioned way. I Googled them,” she said with a laugh. “Finding these old recipes really wasn’t that hard. The only real problem I had was with the grapefruit cocktail. Today it is a drink. Back then it was an appetizer/salad and was served in a pretty piece of stemware. That was the hardest recipe to find.

“I don’t know why they would have had two creamed items on the menu. All that butter and milk. And if you look at pictures of them, they all had these teeny-tiny waists.”

Unger said chapter members realized this important anniversary was coming up a couple of years ago and wanted to do something special for the occasion. Once the original menu was found in historical records, she thought it would be fitting to recreate that first meal.

The meal — consisting of grapefruit cocktail, creamed chicken on patty shells, creamed peas in potato nests, celery, hot rolls and tomato jelly — was served on Tri Kappa plates, as was the dessert course of ice cream, cake, nuts and coffee. The Mitchell chapter is one of only two chapters in the state to have its own chapter house, therefore, having its own plates and cutlery. Everything was in a black-and-white decor, which are the colors of Tri Kappa.

During the program, chapter members shared historic events, news stories and the history of the Mitchell chapter.

Tri Kappa exists only in the state of Indiana. The organization was founded in Indianapolis in 1901 by seven women at the Girls’ Classical School.

Those original seven members were to go to their respective hometowns and found a chapter. Today there are 146 active chapters and 114 associate chapters throughout the state, which include about 9,000 members.
