Volunteer smorgasbord set for French Lick-West Baden

The historic resort communities of French Lick and West Baden are cooperating to make it easier for people to find their ideal volunteer experience.

At a free Volunteer Open House on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, those over 18 can browse the opportunities available at four nonprofit organizations: French Lick West Baden Museum, French Lick Scenic Railway, Indiana Landmarks, and Visit French Lick West Baden (the convention and visitors bureau for Orange County). Refreshments will be served at the open house, 5-7 p.m. at the Visitors Center in French Lick, IN.

Staff and volunteers from each organization will discuss the various ways volunteers can participate in delivering entertaining and educational programs to visitors. The organizations need volunteers as tour guides, museum store assistants, office assistants, tourism ambassadors and special projects volunteers.

Visit French Lick West Baden provides visitor information via phone, email and in person at the Visitors Center where tourists receive assistance with trip itineraries, obtain information about local and regional attractions, and pick up maps.

Indiana Landmarks, a statewide historic preservation group, offers guided walking tours of the historic French Lick and West Baden Springs hotels and operates Landmarks Emporium, museum stores located inside each historic hotel.

The French Lick West Baden Museum offers visitors a glimpse into the past of the historic resort towns and features “the biggest little show on earth,” a miniature diorama of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus that once occupied winter quarters in French Lick.

The French Lick Scenic Railway, located in the historic French Lick Depot, preserves, restores and displays railroad history. The railway operates train excursions, including a new Murder Mystery event and The Polar Express, a popular winter ride.
