May in Harrison County

Hayswood Theatre Presents Rumors
May 10 to May 26
Hayswood Theatre on Capitol Avenue in Historic Downtown Corydon, Indiana, announces Neil Simons Rumors opening on May 10 and running through May 26. As the play begins, Ken Gorman and his wife, Chris, arrive early at his client’s anniversary party to find the house empty except for his client who is upstairs in the bedroom, face down in a pool of blood. The good news is it isn’t as bad as it seems. The bad news is that the couple have to act like nothing is wrong, despite the fact that there is no food, no help and no hosts. As the guests continue to arrive, the stories told, assumed, implied and discovered become more and more tangled until the entire party finds themselves working together to hide what they do know . . .which they all agree isn’t much. Visit hayswoodtheatre.com for more info.

Salute National Travel and Tourism Week!
 May 4th to 12th
The first full week of May is recognized as National Travel and Tourism Week. It is locally known as Harrison County Travel and Tourism Week, a tradition since 1984 after Congress passed a joint resolution in 1983 designating the week to be celebrated in May. Between May 4th and 12th, the Harrison County Convention and Visitors Bureau invites the local community to “Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown” and discover everything there is to do in your own backyard.
The HCCVB works throughout the year to design special advertising and promotional programs that will encourage out-of-town visitors to come to Harrison County for overnight visits. During “Tourism Week”, the HCCVB focuses on the community’s awareness of the importance of tourism as a major industry that is vital to the economic stability and growth in Harrison County. Stop by the Blaine H. Wiseman Visitors Center May 4-12 for an open house.

Patoka 2000 Duck Race

The 21st annual Patoka 2000 Duck Race will be held on Sunday, May 19th at 1:00 p.m. near the gazebo in the RiverWalk plaza area. Hundreds of cute little toy ducks will compete in this unique event! You can sponsor a duck for $5 each or 3 for $10.  Volunteers will man a table at Home Town IGA in Jasper various times throughout April and May.  You can also stop in daily at the Jasper Chamber of Commerce at 302 West 6th Street and at various businesses in the downtown area.
Old Jasper Day and the Jasper Lions Club Strawberry Festival will also be held on that same day.  It is a day full of excitement and activities including train rides, carriage rides, great food, concerts featuring Danielle Lee Wehr (2-3) and then Scott Saalman and his group will “Read (and sing) For Food” (5-6), and the Jasper City Mill will be open, too.
Funds raised during the Duck Race will support the continuing efforts of Patoka 2000:
•Semi-annual clean-up of the Patoka Bridge Area
•Beautification of the Patoka Bridge Area, planting of flowers,
     spreading mulch, etc.
•Planting the flowers on the bridge for each season.  Flags have now been
added for added beautification.  New flower pots have been added in 2013, courtesy of
     the Rotary Club of Jasper.
•Re-greening and tree planting in the downtown areas of Jasper.
•One of our purposes is to plant trees where appropriate, preserve
existing trees, promote the proper trimming of trees, and to be
an educational resource to the community.
•Every tree we plant strengthens the global forest…
connecting us to all who have gone before us and all who will follow.
•Annual tree recognition of an historical tree in Jasper on
     Arbor Day.
•Supporting the efforts to make Jasper a Tree City USA community.
•Making Earth Day and these events important for this area.
•Coordinating with VUJC in their terrific efforts in having a Green Campus
and applauding them on becoming an official Tree Campus USA.

The Patoka 2000 beautification committee meets the second Thursday of each month at Azura CafĂ© and Deli at 8:00 a.m.  If you are interested in joining Patoka 2000, wish to make a financial contribution or would just like to get involved – show up at a meeting or call the Jasper Chamber of Commerce for more information:  812/482-6866.
